UOG Delegation from Papua New Guinea Visited UNESCO-ICHEI

On 24 October 2024, a delegation from the University of Goroka (UOG) in Papua New Guinea visited the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI). The delegation members included Dr. Matthew Landu, Pro-Vice Chancellor - Academic, Research Innovation, and Dr. Jane Awi, Executive Director of Somare Research Institute and Director of Center for Confucius Education, Culture Research. Mr. SIT Fung, Chief of International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) Management Centre, and Mr. CAO Zian, Programme Officer of Knowledge Production and Communications Centre, discussed potential collaborations with the delegation. Mr. ZHAO Lei, General Manager of Beijing Oursky Digital Technology Co., Ltd., and Mr. XING Taiquan, International Director of Wuhan OS-EASY Group Holding Ltd., also participated in the meeting.



UNESCO-ICHEI introduced its flagship projects, including the IIOE Micro-Certification Project for Higher Education Workforce Digital Competency Building (IIOE Micro-Certification Project), the IIOE '1+X' GenAI course series, and the Smart Classroom Project. Dr. Matthew Landu acknowledged the innovative initiatives of UNESCO-ICHEI in facilitating the digital transformation of higher education and expressed keen interest in the Smart Classroom Project. Dr. Jane Awi highlighted the significant potential of the IIOE '1+X' GenAI course series for teacher training in Papua New Guinea and looked forward to establishing a partnership with UNESCO-ICHEI.

UNESCO-ICHEI and UOG reached an initial consensus on cooperation in areas, such as digital and AI competency building for the higher education workforce and Smart Classroom development. After the meeting, the UOG delegation visited the IIOE AI Lab at UNESCO-ICHEI.


The University of Goroka

The University of Goroka (UOG) is the third largest of the six universities in Papua New Guinea, and is by far the largest teacher education institution. The University was formed in 1997 from two faculties of the University of Papua New Guinea, Goroka Teacher’s College and the Faculty of Education. UOG aims to train and produce quality teachers for all levels of learning and professionals who are highly skilled, competent, research-oriented and lifelong learners for nation-building. For the overall coordination of all research activities at the University, the Somare Research Institute was conceived by the top management team in 2018 and set up in 2019. It is named in honour of the Founding Father of Papua New Guinea, Great Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare.
