UNESCO-ICHEI was invited to the conference "Artificial Intelligence in the Education System of Turkmenistan"

On 23 December 2024, the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan organised the conference "Artificial Intelligence in the Education System of Turkmenistan", targeting higher education workforce and government officials in Turkmenistan. The UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE), the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI), and other organisations were invited to the event.



In his opening remarks, Mr. Azat Atayev, Deputy Minister of Education of Turkmenistan, stated the significance of integrating digital and generative AI technologies into higher education systems. Turkmenistan recently developed the "Programme on the Development of the Digital Education System in Turkmenistan (DDES@Turkmenistan) for 2023-2030 Years". This programme aims to implement digital reforms in the education system, covering issues such as infrastructure development, improvement of teachers' skills, development of e-learning content, and the introduction of the latest technologies into the educational process.


Mr. ZHAN Tao, Director of UNESCO IITE, outlined UNESCO's joint projects on artificial intelligence in higher education, highlighting its partnership with UNESCO-ICHEI to support the digital transformation of higher education institutions. Mr. XIE Chao, Vice President of Huawei Regional Office for ME CA, stressed the role of Huawei ICT competition in fostering ICT talent development and its continued efforts to advance ICT growth in the Middle East and Central Asia.


Ms. BI Xiaohan, Deputy Director of the UNESCO-ICHEI, delivered a keynote speech on UNESCO-ICHEI's vision for transforming higher education through AI and digital capacity-building. She presented UNESCO-ICHEI's key initiatives aimed at empowering higher education workforce in Central Asia, including the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) platform, as well as the UNESCO IITE and UNESCO-ICHEI joint project on digital capacity building for the higher education workforce among Central Asian countries. Ms. BI called on higher education institutions from Turkmenistan to join the IIOE network, highlighting the great potential of the IIOE platform and its resources in supporting AI and digital empowerment in Turkmen higher education institutions.
