ICHEI and UNESCO Co-launched IIOE Micro-Certification Courses

2025.11.24

On 20 November 2025, UNESCO-ICHEI and the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE) jointly launched two Micro-certification courses on the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) learning platform. These courses focus on the application of generative artificial intelligence in teaching and learning: Generative AI and Learning Outcomes Assessment and How to Guide Students in Using Generative AI. The courses were officially released during a webinar that attracted more than 1,200 higher education stakeholders from over ten countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, and Latvia. Participants included university faculty, representatives from the governmnet sector and international organizations reflecting strong interest in integrating AI into education across Central Asia and beyond.

Both courses are now available on the Russian-language version of the IIOE platform, jointly managed by UNESCO-ICHEI and the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE). Partner universities across Central Asia and beyond will use these resources to organize large-scale, localized training, empowering higher education teachers and progressively integrating the courses into institutional and national professional development certification systems.

Course I: Generative AI and Learning Outcomes Assessment - Redefining teaching evaluation systems for precise educational assessment

Designed by Ivan Pechishchev, Associate Professor at Perm State University in Russia and an expert in media education, this course offers a systematic exploration of how generative AI can enhance educational assessment. It aims to equip educators with the skills to translate learning objectives into diverse assignment types, establish standards-based grading frameworks, implement automated assessment tools, deliver personalized learning feedback, and conduct in-depth analyses of student performance data—thereby significantly improving evaluation efficiency and instructional accuracy.

Course II: How to Guide Students in Using Generative AI - Building a responsible AI culture and safeguarding academic integrity

This course, developed by Tatiana Golubtsova, Vice President of the Kazakhstan-based Psychology, Business and Media Association, addresses the ethical and managerial challenges of generative AI in higher education. It provides targeted guidance for instructors on helping students use AI tools appropriately and securely through collaborative rule-setting, clear role definition, and proactive risk education. Participants will learn to harness AI’s potential to support writing, project design, and academic research while safeguarding academic integrity, thereby promoting the deeper integration of AI into educational practice.

The release of these Micro-certification courses marks a key achievement under Phase II of the ICHEI–IITE Joint Project, designed to meet the practical needs of higher education teachers in Central Asia and beyond. Focused on generative AI and digital pedagogy, the courses aim to provide open, inclusive, and high-quality educational resources. Through the Russian-language version of IIOE and local partner networks, the courses will be further implemented to strengthen teachers' AI skills and competencies.

About the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE)

As a UNESCO Category I institute, the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education is dedicated to promoting the innovative application of information and communication technologies (ICT) in member states to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4); enhancing education quality by disseminating ICT-driven pedagogy and best practices to improve teacher competencies; and unleashing the potential of ICT for educational transformation through global dialogue and networks. The institute is a key partner for UNESCO-ICHEI in advancing project cooperation in Central Asia and neighbouring countries. In 2024, the two sides officially launched the second phase of their collaboration, jointly developing a series of Russian-language Micro-certification courses on the theme "Generative Artificial Intelligence and Higher Education," and conducting localised training via the IIOE Russian-language platform to continuously empower higher education professionals in the Central Asian sub-region and beyond with AI competencies.
