CreateView Smart Classroom Empowering Digital Futures of Higher Education in Uganda

On 9 September 2022, the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI) and Makerere University, Uganda jointly launched the Smart Classroom (SCR) at Makerere University. The ceremony is one of the events of a UNESCO-ICHEI overseas mission to implement SCR projects in Africa and Asia, which started in July 2022. Participants include Mr LYU Feng, Assistant Director and Chief of IIOE Management Centre of UNESCO-ICHEI, Mr. Jeff Lee,General Managerof CreateView International (sponsoring enterprise of the SCR at Makerere University), Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Tonny Oyana, Principal of the Makerere University College of Computing and Information Sciences of Makerere University, Mr. Hassan Adeel Shehzad, Programme specialist and Chief Technology Officer for SCR Project of UNESCO-ICHEI, members of the UNESCO-ICHEI team, representatives of Makerere University and local media.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marks the launch of the SCR at Makerere University. Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and Prof. Tonny Oyana, Principal of the College of Computing and Information Sciences expressed their appreciation for the great support of UNESCO-ICHEI, CreateView and the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). The launch of the SCR marks a significant landmark in the partnership between Makerere University and UNESCO-ICHEI, while the SCR would provide strong support for digital teaching and learning at the University. Makerere University will continue working with UNESCO-ICHEI to empower the digital transformation of higher education in Uganda.

Mr LYU Feng, Assistant Director and Chief of IIOE Management Centre of UNESCO-ICHEI delivered a speech representing UNESCO-ICHEI. He emphasised that the SCR project has played an important role in strengthening digital educational infrastructure, empowering higher education innovation and mitigating education disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the multi-stakeholder partnership between UNESCO-ICHEI, SUSTech, partner universities in developing countries and EdTech enterprises. The successful implementation of the SCR at Makerere University sets an example of international collaboration for quality higher education. He stressed that UNESCO-ICHEI will continue to cooperate with Makerere University to support digital transformation of higher education in Uganda.

Mr. Jeff Lee, General Manager of CreateView International congratulated the launch of SCR at Makerere University and expressed his gratitude for UNESCO-ICHEI's unwavering support throughout the project. He reiterated CreateView's mission of "building a world of equitable education through innovation" and expressed his hope that CreateView's advanced teaching equipment would support Makerere University's education and teaching, contributing to the digital transformation of higher education and the promotion of education equity. Under the guidance of UNESCO-ICHEI, CreateView will continue to support the Belt and Road Initiative, to strengthen exchanges with Makerere University, and to promote the use of technology to improve education quality and empower the cultivation of innovative talents.

Finally, Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe presented a certificate of appreciation to Mr Shehzad for his outstanding contribution in facilitating the collaboration between Makerere University, UNESCO-ICHEI, CreateView and SUSTech.
