ICHEI and SUSTech Attended 2018 Yidan Prize SummitDecember 13, 2018
On December 10th, 2018, Prof. LI Ming, Director of ICHEI, and Prof. CHEN Shiyi, President of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), led the delegation of ICHEI and SUSTech to attend the 2018 Yidan Prize Summit held in Hong Kong. The theme of this year’s Yidan Prize Summit was “Educating for the Future: How?”. World-renowned policy-makers, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, educators and innovators gathered in Hong Kong to discuss what steps can be taken to ensure education meets future needs and the practical steps to achieve this goal.
Dr. Charles CHEN Yidan, founder of the Yidan Prize, HRH Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, Mme. Naledi PANDOR, South Africa’s Minister of Higher Education & Training, Ms. Yaneth GIHA, Former Minister of Education of Colombia, Mme. Graca Machel, President of the University of Cape Town, Prof. Sugata MITRA, Professor of Educational Technology at Newcastle University and pioneer of “Hole in the Wall” experiment, Rt Hon Gordon BROWN, UN Special Envoy for Global Education and Former Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer, all delivered keynote speeches in the Summit and shared their perspectives on how to accommodate to education in the future.
ICHEI delegation had fruitful communication with experts and professionals at the Summit. Dr. Charles CHEN, founder of the Yidan Prize, is also Member of the Governing Board of ICHEI. During the Summit, Prof. LI Ming and Prof. CHEN Shiyi had in-depth discussions with Dr. Charles CHEN over cooperation and exchanges. ICHEI also discussed cooperation issues with Mr. TANG Qian, who is Chair of the Yidan Prize Advisory Committee and also Member of the Governing Board of ICHEI. In order to facilitate the progress of ICHEI’s Digital Education Link Programme in Africa, ICHEI held an informal meeting with Mr. Dankert Vedeler, Former Minister of Education of Norway, and reached a consensus over the cooperation between ICHEI and Norway in the African region. ICHEI also communicated with the Yidan Prize for Education Development Laureate, Mr. Anant Agarwal, founder and CEO of edX. ICHEI invited him to participate in the 2019 International Conference on Media and Education to be held in SUSTech next year. Mr. Anant Agarwal happily accepted the invitation. At the Summit, ICHEI also talked with Mme. Naledi PANDOR, South Africa’s Minister of Higher Education & Training, and Mme. Graca Machel, President of the University of Cape Town. Prof. LI Ming introduced that ICHEI has just finished its trip to South Africa to discuss potential cooperation opportunities, and both sides expressed strong willingness to cooperate with each other.
Yidan Prize was first launched by Dr. Charles CHEN in 2016, with an aim to create a better world through education. Yidan Prize consists of the Yidan Prize for Educational Research and for Educational Development. Yidan Prize laureate will be awarded a gold medal and 30 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately 3.9 million USD). Through a series of initiatives, Yidan Prize aims to build a platform where the global community can participate in education-related dialogues and play a role in education charity. The 2018 Yidan Prize for Education Research Laureate is Professor Larry HEDGES, who is one of the most influential applied statisticians in the world. His work in educational policy allows policymakers, educators and the general public to see the evidence for “what works” in the field of education, and makes it possible to take a scientific approach to improving education for future generations. The 2018 Yidan Prize for Education Development Laureate is Professor Anant AGARWAL, CEO of edX, an online learning destination founded by Harvard and MIT. The platform currently offers over 2,000 online courses from more than 130 leading institutions to over 17.6 million people.
