2018 Seminar on ICT Application in Higher Education for African Countries ClosedJuly 14, 2018
On July 9th 2018, the foreign aid programme of the Ministry of Commerce of China, the “2018 Seminar on ICT Application in Higher Education for African Countries” was successfully concluded.
Mr. FAN Xiangdong, Vice President of Shenzhen Association for Promoting International Economic & Technological Cooperation (APIETC), Prof. LU Chun, Vice President of SUSTech, Mrs. ANN Therese Ndong-Jatta, Director of UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, Prof. LI Ming, Director of Center for Higher Education Research (CHER) of SUSTech and Mr. WU Lintuo, Director of Huawei’s Global Education Cooperation Program attended the closing ceremony and delivered speeches. In total, 40 participants from 12 African countries participated in the event, including South Africa, Egypt, Djibouti, Uganda, Gambia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Kenya and Botswana.
On behalf of APIETC, Mr. FAN Xiangdong then gave a speech in which he congratulated the participants on the successful completion of the seminar, and expressed his appreciation for the support provided by SUSTech and the well-designed courses and activities arranged by CHER. During the seminar, participants paid field trips to visit major Chinese companies in the cities of Beijing, Hangzhou and Shenzhen and took part in colorful cultural activities. He hoped that participants can bring technologies of ICT application in higher education and Sino-African friendship home.
On behalf of SUSTech, Prof. LU Chun gave a speech in which he congratulated the participants on the successful completion of the seminar, and expressed his gratitude for the support provided by APIETC. He underlined that the three weeks’ of courses and visits have injected fresh cultural blood in SUSTech, and he looked forward to further exchanges between SUSTech and institutions of the participants, not only on lessons gained from China, but on cooperation of ICT application in higher education.
Mr. WU Lintuo followed to say that Huawei was very honored to provide instructors on big data and cloud computing and field visits in Hangzhou Training Centre for the seminar. He also looked forward to more cooperation with African countries on ICT application in higher education.
Mrs. ANN Therese Ndong-Jatta then took the stage to extend her appreciation to SUSTech and APIETC for providing the platform for African participants. She congratulated the participants on the completion of the seminar, praised the arrangement of the courses and activities, and expressed her gratitude for the support on International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the Auspices of UNESCO (ICHEI) provided by SUSTech. She went on to highlight the vital role of ICT for promoting massification and innovation of higher education in Africa. She also looked forward to more research and cooperation with SUSTech and Chinese companies.
Prof. LI Ming thanked Prof. LU Chun for attending the closing ceremony and for the support of SUSTech on the seminar. He followed to appreciate the helps by Mr. FAN Xiangdong and APIETC, and expressed his gratitude to the attending of Mrs. ANN Therese Ndong-Jatta. He spoke highly of the achievements gained by the participants, and said he had a deeper knowledge of the status quo and vision of African countries in terms of ICT application in higher education. He was looking forward to joining hands with African universities and institutions to improve the massification and quality of higher education by applying ICT.
The participants were then invited on stage to share their thoughts on the seminar. They expressed their gratitude to the organizers and spoke highly of the curriculum that they had followed. They went on to say that the seminar had been a valuable exchange for their countries with China in the field of information technology in higher education.
The seminar lasted for 21 days and was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of China. It was organized by the APIETC and co-organized by CHER. The participants came from 12 different countries from South Africa, Egypt, Djibouti, Uganda, Gambia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Kenya and Botswana. The seminar showcases the innovation and experience of China’s ICT application in the field of higher education, and helps participants to understand and draw lessons from China’s achievements of ICT application in higher education which can then be implemented in their countries.
