SUSTech and UNESCO-ICHEI Attended Pan-African High Level Conference on EducationApril 29, 2018
From April 24 to 26, 2018, Ms Guo Yurong, Chairperson of University Council of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) led a delegation to attend the Pan-African High-Level Conference on Education- Bridging continental and global education frameworks for the Africa We Want and visited United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and University of Nairobi in Nairobi, Kenya. The other members of the Delegation are Prof. HOU Shengtao, Director of Global Engagement Office, Prof. ZHENG Chunmiao, Chair Professor and Dean of School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Prof. ZHAO Jianhua, Deputy Director of Centre for Higher Education Research and Senior Expert of UNESCO-ICHEI and Ms Sarah LI, Programme Manager of UNESCO-ICHEI.
Organized by UNESCO, in collaboration with the African Union and the Government of Kenya, the event invited Ministers of Education from the 54 African countries, as well as UN agencies, NGOs, and high level representatives in the education sector in the world, to further discuss, understand and exchange on how the alignment between Sustainable Development Goal 4 and the Continental Strategy for Education in Africa is influencing current agendas, education legislation, policy, plans, financing and monitoring and information systems, as well as devised mechanisms for consultation, coordination, collaboration and reporting.
Dr. Amina C. Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary for Education, Kenya expressed her gratitude to Chinese government for the concern and support provided. She welcomed SUSTech and UNESCO-ICHEI to explore further cooperation in higher education in Kenya.
Prof. HOU Shengtao and Prof. ZHAO Jianhua delivered keynote speeches at the conference introducing UNESCO-ICHEI and SUSTech’s ICT-enabled innovation in higher education, as well as projects such as Digital Education Link and Smart Classroom. The Delegation also had meeting with UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, Delegation of Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports and Delegation of the Gambia.
The Delegation visited University of Nairobi and discussed with Ms XIAO Shan, Director of Confucius Institute and Prof. Henry M. Mutembei, Director of Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies on cooperation of education, research and student exchange. Process of signing an MOU between SUSTech, UNESCO-ICHEI and University of Nairobi has been initiated. University of Nairobi is the largest university in Kenya. It consists of 6 colleges and 76 academic departments.
