UNESCO-ICHEI participated in the Fifth Meeting of UNESCO Education Category II Centres

Invited by Egyptian Ministry of Education, UNESCO-ICHEI participated in the Fifth Meeting of UNESCO Education Category II Centres, held in Cairo, Egypt on 20-22 February 2018, and delivered a keynote speech during the meeting.

Organized by Egyptian Ministry of Education, UNESCO Beirut Office, UNESCO Cairo Office, UNESCO Regional Centre for Adult Education (ASFEC), the main objective of the meeting is to establish an active networking mechanism among all Category II centres, as well as exchange expericences in the field of adult education.

Directors from seven UNESCO Category II centres participated in the meeting, which are UNESCO Regional Center for Adult Education (ASFEC) in Egypt, UNESCO Regional Centre for Quality and Excellence (RCQE) in Saudi Arabia, UNESCO Regional Centre for Educational Planning (RCEP) in UAE, UNESCO Regional Centre for Early Childhood Care and Education in the Arab States Damascus (RCECCE) in Syrian Arab Republic, UNESCO International Research and Training Centre for Rural Education (INRULED) in China, UNESCO South Asian Centre for Teacher Development (SACTD) in Sri Lanka, UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) in the Republic of Korea, and UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (ICHEI) in China. UNESCO-ICHEI was the only Category II Centre specialized in higher education. Also present at the meeting were representatives from UNESCO headquater, UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), Egyptian Ministry of Education and local universities.

Many issues, such as collaborative projects among Category I Institutes, UNESCO Regional Bureaus and Category II Centres; how to identify ways of enhancing the impact and visibility of Education Category II Centres; how to evaluate ways of enhancing the impact and visibility of Education Category II Centres network have been discussed during the meeting. Madame Anne Coupez from UNESCO Paris and Professor Reda Hegazy, Head of General Eductaion Sector in UNESCO Beirut Office fully acknowledged the role of Category II Centres in the UNESCO Education Work Plan.

After the meeting, representatives visited UNESCO Regional Centre for Adult Education, located in Sirs El lyann. A roundtable discussion was held there to further discuss issues of mutual exchanges and futher cooperation. A Joint Statement will be published based on inputs from partcipants.
