UNESCO-ICHEI is actively involved in Huawei ICT Skill Competition Middle East 2017

During December 20th – 27th of 2017, Huawei organized its ICT Skill Competition Middle East 2017 in Shenzhen. Prof. LI Ming, Director of UNESCO-ICHEI, and Prof. ZHAO Jianhua, Senior Specialist of UNESCO-ICHEI were invited to attend this event. The delegation of ICT talent teams and H.E. Ali Dhaheri, UAE Ambassador to China also paid a visit to UNESCO-ICHEI and SUSTech.

On the afternoon of 25th, the Talent Cultivation Summit & Award Ceremony was held by Ms. CHEN Lifang, Corporate Senior Vice President of Huawei, while Mr. DING Lianpu, Director of Center for China-Foreign People-to-People Exchanges, Ministry of Education, China, as well as 10 countries’ Ambassadors to China attended the event.

Prof. ZHAO delivered a keynote presentation on the topic of “ICT for Better Education & Societies Development”, in which he highlighted the significance of ICT in promoting higher education innovation. Specifically, he shared two good practices to showcase what UNESCO-ICHEI had done so far for promoting university-industry cooperation. He added that, in the future, UNESCO-ICHEI would continue to employ ICT to push forward the development of higher education in project countries and ultimately achieve the goal of massifying higher education and improving employment of graduates.

In the roundtable session, Prof. LI Ming shared how ICHEI as a UNESCO Category 2 institute could better facilitate member states to achieve Education 2030 agenda and their national education goals leveraged by use of ICTs. He shared with the audience the case of ICHEI’s collaboration with Ministry of Education, Pakistan for literacy teacher cultivation, and concluded that “ICT has the huge potential to overcome the challenges of improving literacy rates in country with huge population like Pakistan.”

On the morning of 26th, H.E. Dr. Ali Dhaheri, head of mission – UAE Ambassador to China, and the delegation of ICT talent teams came to visit SUSTech and ICHEI. Ms. GUO Yurong, Chairperson of University Council of SUSTech, introduced the development of SUSTech and expressed the university’s wish to establish partnership with top universities in UAE. Prof. LI, Director of ICHEI also shared the development and achievement of ICHEI since its establishment in 2016. He added that in the future, ICHEI would like to seek collaboration with top science and engineering focused universities in UAE. Together, they would use higher education innovation and ICT innovation to enhance quality of higher education and to prepare talents for global development.

H.E. Dr. Ali Dhaheri was very impressed the rapid development of SUSTech and ICHEI. He spoke highly of the vision of ICHEI and believed that higher education innovation would no doubt encourage the young generation to be innovative and enhance their overall capability. UAE would like to work closely with SUSTech and ICHEI to cultivate more talents to meet the demands of globalization.

At the same time, the delegation of ICT talent teams visited SUSTech. Prof. LU Chun, Chief Operating Officer of SUSTech introduced the rapid development of SUSTech. Prof. Georgios Theodoropoulos, Chair Professor at Department of Computer Science and Engineering also shared with the delegations the specific development of his department. During the Q&A sessions, the participants expressed their keen interests in SUSTech and eager wishes to know more about the admission requirements for international students.
