This November, ICHEI sent three delegates from the Asia-Pacific Programme Office to Cambodia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to conduct feasibility studies of the Smart Classroom Project. The delegates were joined by representatives from Weidong Cloud Education Group, strategic partner of ICHEI and sponsor of the Project. Together, they were warmly welcomed and received by the partner universities in the above-mentioned project countries.

Fan LI and Sherry DUAN first went to Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) in Cambodia during November 8-11th. The delegates, together with Weidong representatives, had an in-depth discussion with Prof. Phal Des, Vice Rector for academic affairs and ICT development of the university, to thoroughly look into the implementation scheme and use plan of Smart Classroom Project, and to finalize the details on the collaboration agreement.

Later, between November 11-14th, the delegates continued their mission trip onto Sri Lanka. At University of Colombo, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake warmly welcomed the delegates and introduced different faculty members and officials in charge of the implementation of Smart Classroom Project, and held a high-level meeting on it. The proposed venue for the Smart Classroom is the university library, which is expected to encourage teaching staff from different faculties to fully take advantage of it.

At the same time, Tim TANG went to University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore in Pakistan. There, he had several rounds of multi-level discussions with Vice Chancellor, Prof. Khalid, and Director of KICS, Dr. Waqar, as well as other university officials. They discussed extensively on the establishment of Smart Classroom and their future plans to use it. Meanwhile, Prof. Khalid expressed his strong will of establishing more cooperation with ICHEI and SUSTech, which would be signed into formal memorandum of understanding later on.

All three trips have led to positive outcomes on the agreements, which would initiate the next phase of planning and work. ICHEI plays a key role in leading the Project, facilitating the communications between Weidong Cloud Education Group and partner universities. In the next phase, each party will have specific role and responsibilities: Weidong Cloud Education Group will be in charge of devising a specific work plan and timeline; partner universities will work closely to prepare for the installment of the Smart Classroom; ICHEI will continue to guide and supervise the implementation, as well as provide capacity building and enhance their readiness of using the Smart Classroom.

The Smart Classroom Project is a pilot project under ICHEI’s “Digital Education Link” Programme. It will be implemented at partner universities in six project countries across two continents, which are Cambodia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Djibouti, Egypt, and Ethiopia. The key functions of the Smart Classroom will be to enable partner universities to build a comprehensive Learning Management System (LMS), expand their educational resources, as well as to establish a recording and broadcasting system for their academic programmes across campuses. In the future, ICHEI will actively seek opportunities to play a critical role in serving as an information-sharing platform and idea laboratory for innovation in higher education through the use of ICT.
