SUSTech UNESCO Category II Project Team participates in the 30th Plenary Meeting of National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO and visits educational institutions in BeijingDecember 24, 2015
From December 21st to 23rd, 2015, Party Secretary of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and UNESCO Category II Project team leader, Professor LI Ming, attended the 30th Plenary Meeting of National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO. He and his also team went to several educational institutions in Beijing and received a warm reception from the National Ministry of Education’s Development Research Centre. During the visit, it was agreed that the two centres would enjoy future cooperation. Dr. HAN Wei, the deputy of SUSTech UNESCO Category II Project Team, also attended the activities.
The 30th Plenary Meeting of the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO was held on December 23rd. Mr. HAO Ping, the committee chairman, delivered a speech at the meeting. Around 120 representatives from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and other collaborative departments attended the meeting. Professor LI Ming attended the meeting and gave a representative talk of the newly-approved UNESCO Category II Centre. As the first UNESCO Category II Centre proposed by a local government, the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation in Shenzhen will consistently follow the principles and development trend of UNESCO while closely combining the advantages of the IT industry in Shenzhen and the practical experience of the popularisation of higher education in China. With the academic support of SUSTech, the Centre aims to not only to promote the accessibility and the quality of higher education in China, but also to serve the Belt and Road initiative and serve as a source for spreading the soft power of Chinese education. As the centre of operations for ICHEI, SUSTech will also serve as an international platform, projecting their signature characteristics of “Knowledge, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship” in order to further root themselves as a top-quality and global university.
Before the meeting, Professor LI Ming and his team visited the Peking University Online Education Office and Tsinghua University MOOC Taskforce in order to receive an in-depth understanding of the two universities’ current status and strategic planning of online education. Additionally, they visited the Smart Learning Institute and Mobile Learning Laboratory of Beijing Normal University as well as the MyCOS Education Advisory Body with the purpose of exploring potential future cooperation. The delegation also visited the National Ministry of Education’s Development Research Centre and informed the Deputy Director, YANG Yinfu, of the reforms and explorations SUSTech has done in recent years. The visit concluded with both parties expressing willingness to strengthen relations between our two organisations.
